Activity 12 - "Intercultural Communication In The Future"

I think the most important thing I learned about intercultural communication is to have an open mind. I need to remember that everyone is equal, no matter what race, religion, or gender. I am usually not one to stereotype or be cruel, but sometimes it is difficult not to judge someone. It is hard to remove those stereotypes, especially if they are negative.

Intercultural communication has taught me to be myself and to not let others put you down based on your culture. That is something that is important to everyone and though you may not have the same culture as others, your culture is still just as important. I am very proud of my ethnicity and how I was raised, and I would never let anyone let me think differently. It is important to be true to yourself and live your life how you want to.

I do not think this class has necessarily taught me to be an intercultural communication “expert,” but I think it has taught me to be able to determine situations that deal with intercultural communication and has taught me to evaluate these as well. I now know how to look at things from both sides and how to keep an open heart and an open mind. I am not extremely book smart when it comes to intercultural communication, but I do have a lot of common sense on this topic and I would be able to control my thoughts and help others if they were to be put down or putting down others.

After this course, in order to properly maintain my intercultural communication experience and knowledge, I plan on thinking a lot harder about my actions and spreading the word to others. I am going to be better about pointing out inappropriate situations and actions to my friends and family and will be more likely to stand up for what is right. A lot of times I will see something that is rude concerning cultures and I usually just look away, or think to myself how rude that would be if it were to happen to me. I will now try harder to stop situations like this happening and help others to learn more about intercultural communication.

What was the most important thing you will take away from this class?

  1. I, like you, will take away the fact that it is important to keep your mind open to everything. Our world is changing so much these days and with those changes come new experiences with cultures that we may not be familiar with. I think that as long as you are open to what is out there, everything will turn out perfect - or whatever idea of perfect you had envisioned.

  2. I also agree, to keep an open mind is the biggest thing I will take away from this class. I want to meet people with a fresh outlook and try to get to know them without stereotyping who I think they might be. If I am able to do that I think it will help me understand more cultures.

  3. I also agree that the most important thing is to open minded. Everyone is different, even within the same culture and you need to be accepting of others. You're not going to like every single person you meet, but don't judge them based on culture or background.

  4. I am in agreement also that being open minded is the most important thing to take away from this class. Being open minded will help us to deal with all the differences that exist between cultures. An open mind will help everyone professionally no matter what job they are looking for.

  5. I have to agree with everyone else's posts, that expanding my mind to be more open was the biggest thing to take away from this class. An open mind will always leave you feeling better, more informed, and a more part of the human phenomenon.

  6. I also agree in the fact that we need to have an open mind in everything we do. Our culture is changing all the time, like others, so we need to keep in mind that our opinions can change, things will happen and change, and things in cultures will not always remain the same. I think I learned enough from this course to realize more about viewing different cultures with open eyes, which is something I'll always do!

  7. The most important thing I learned in this course is very similar to everyone else's posts thus far. For instance, the number one thing I will take away from this course is that I might someday be put into an intercultural conflict. So upon taking this class, I will now be able to handle the situation more smoothly. In other words, I agree with everyone's postings so far--that to be open-minded is a huge aspect that we need to keep in mind as we grow older.

  8. I have felt the same hope with my intercultural communications. I still however find the importance of travel increasing in my mind. Different foods, clothes, and lifestyles are desired experiences that I have gained out of this class!

  9. The most important thing that I have taken away from this class is that is extremely important to have common knowledge about other cultures. Our cultures are not the only ones that exist we will always be meeting new people that are different from us and if we are not knowledgeable on what types od behaviors to avoid then we may offend others, this is something that is extremely important when communicating in your career or the rest of your daily life.

  10. I plan to learn what I can from others, either by asking, seeing, or experiencing. I also agree though that keeping an open mind to different ideas and views is something that I will hopefully always be able to continue doing.
